New Media in Foreign Language Education

Task 9: "Learning with New Media" or "New Learning with Media"

Do we still learn with new media or is it the time for an new learning with the available media from today?

This question arises if we think about media in class. What is the difference? Do we still learn with the use of new media as computers as an alternative to teachers, or induced us the existence of media that we have to come up with new learning and therefore new learning methods? Does both mean the same? What is meant by new media or new learning?

Learning with New Media => Behaviorism
If we connect the slogan with the philosophy of behaviorism we can define the slogan as follows: Tools for an online vocabulary training or an online multiple choice test, where one have to give the right answer and no creativity is questioned, is a kind of learning with new media. New media in this case mean, that computers substitute teachers who would query vocabularies. The behaviour of the students is caused by an external stimuli => a question to a specific topic which they already know. Therefore, the behaviour can be explained without the need to consider internal mental states or consciousness. The students use specific tools to internalize a topic but there is no need of pedagogical or theoretical teaching methods.
Whereas, the other slogan New Learning with Media, highlights that there is a new learning with the media we already have.

New Learning with Media => Cunstructivism

Concerning the existence of computers since many years, I would say that today we canot talk about learning with new media anymore. One have to introduce new learning methods for the huge existence of online tools which can be easily used for teaching at school. The students themselve are in the centre of a learning progress not the computer as a new media which support learning. Learning with computers and internet is much more than just  clicking. But for this, one need new learning methods for teaching which have to be reflected and well planed. In this case new learning is an active and constructive process rather than acquiring it. The stundents who are the learner create or construct their own subjective representations. Within this kind of learning real world scenarios are involved, criticial thinking of students is supported, teachers are the facilitator and theory is put into practice. Hence, an example of new learning with media in class is the use of so called webquests. WebQuests are online researches based on a specific webquests hompage. The material on this homepage is well researched so that the students do not need to search for usable homepages on their own for their topics. Examples for WebQuests teaching methods can be find online.

To sum up: Learning with new media was yesterday. New learning with media is today. Learn-theoretical oriented is in this case an averting from behaviorism and a turning to constructivism.
