Task 6: Media Use of the Youth

Picture
Did you know that nearly every person between 12 and 19 has an own computer and mobile phone? Did you know that the use of internet is the second important media after listening to music? And did you know that more than half of the young interviewed use the internet or their own mobile phone more often than reading a magazine or going to the cinema?
The newest JIM-study from 2010, which is performed in Germany since 1998, shows how important freetime activities, computer use, internet use, an own mobile phone and other interests from the youth of 2010 is and which is the most important one. Therefore, the study is a long-term survey which shows continously general devolpments and trends about the topics above. Simultaneously, each investigation contians specific questions to show current media developments. Moreover, the study shows and compares developments from the youth between 12 and 19 about the past 12 years in a regular cycle of one year.

To highlight and contrast the development through the last past years, I will show and discuss some results concercing the use of the internet and others from the years 1998 and 2010.

In 1998:
In 1998, the most important topics were friendships, music, education and profession as well as love and realationships. Less important or of less interests were topics as economy and politics. All in all the television was with 95% the most used media closely followed by listening to music. While the use of computers was on the fourth position for boys, girls prefered all forms of reading. Therefore, boys could least do without their computers whereas girls could least do without radio. In addition, more than threee quarter of the youth used the computer at home and 48% did it several times a week. 9% used the internet at least once in a week. Using the internet for free time activities was for the majority not that important.
Furthermore, gender differences were shown by the different use of the internet: Girls use it for education, learning and writing stuff, whereas boys prefer games, surfing and program.

In 2010:
Since 2010, the internet is an inherent part of every day life. Besides all chances and profits, the risk and problems of the internet use are also present. According to the JIM study, the youth from 2010 spend up to 138 minutes on the internet every day. More than 80% of boys and girls said, that the internet is the second important media after listening to music. Only about 60% used the internet daily or several times a week in 2003, whereas in 2010 90% of youth used it every day or several times a week to check accounts, mails or do others. The majority used it for communication, social networks and other communities. In 2010, nearly 80% had their own computer and almost 50% had an own internet access.

To sum up:
Today, the majority uses and works with the internet. We can not imagine a working day or every day life without it. The internet is a constant companion, its usage varied from school, profession and every day life but especially the youth who starts very early with being online and being up to date, needs the right knowledge about all risks and rights. Parents have to know about the user behaviour of their children. Therefore, they have to speack with them and maybe try it out together. That the internet is an important tool because it improves and supports our knowledge and skills as well as it influences our life is shown by two short videos below. Two people from politics give their statement about "Youth and Network" and what is important to consider.
