New Media in Foreign Language Education

Task 2: Field Trip to Martin Luther School

Media Equipment at Schools

Today, we went to the Martin Luther School in Marburg to check the media equipment and how it is used at this school. Starting with the staff room which has two computers, it is possible to check all media rooms and media equipment with the so called booking system for rooms. With this booking system the teachers can book the media they need or can see which media is already booked and the same with the media rooms. Furthermore, it is possible to check the tests of each class and to reserve or save a date for a  test. Consequently, every teacher can see when their classes write a test.

Moreover, the school has a media cupboard with digital cameras, projectors, loud speakers, dvd players and notebooks. Additionally, they have a so called "PoWi Presenter", which is a case with projector, notebook and loud speaker. Therefore, the teacher does not have to book each single media, he/she just has to book this case if he/she                                                                                                                               wants to watch a video or something like that in class.
As well as the school has four more computers in the library which can be used by teachers and students in their free periods, there are two computer rooms with all told 21 computers. These rooms are used for various subjects and of course for the computer science class. In adition, there are seven class rooms with a tv system which consists of a flatscreen, an audio system and devices for USB sticks and cd´s or dvd´s. Notebooks are also available so that a class can work with the internet without sitting in one of the computer rooms. The 14 notebooks can be used all together but are also bookabel individually. Other features as Smartboards are less available. Just two smartboards for more than 1000 students and one of it is permanently installed in a biology room. So the other one can rarely used. Three more computers are in the so called silence room, which is usable just for teachers for teaching preparation or others.

All in all, it can be said that the four computers in the library which are quite less in relation to more than 1000 students are enough. The students can check the cancellation of lessons on the flatscreens within the school and they can look up cancellations of lessons online for the next day. Furthermore, the silcence room is not that useful because most teachers like to work at home. Also the three photocopiers are definitely less. Imagine, one copier does not work and 50 teachers out of 110 teachers want to copy 30 pages and each page needs 5 seconds?!? Hence, the break will be definitely over!!
While the students improve their knowledge about new media more and more, most of the teachers have little knowledge and only a few  of them spend their free time to improve their knowledge about new media. Therefore, two out of 110 teachers use their own beamer to teach their subject matters but further training courses for new media are more or less unvisited. Generelly, the school is well prepared and the new media will be bought, but it looks like it is not used very much. One reason could be, that the teachers do not have the knowledge and the time to learn it by their own. With attention to the upcoming work with new media and the world wide web, I think it is very important to get the knowledge about this field of work and to be up to date because there is probably no other way. New media is one field of new teaching methods because it is easy, fast and well organized.
One last think, which canot be ignored is that new media equipment is quite expensive and the school is dependent on the institution of the city of Marbrug. Finally, the city provides 100.000 € for all schools in Marbrug and there is definitely more than one school that needs money for new media equipment.
